After each upload

What happens to every new activity

Whatever the source, each activity goes through the same steps a few seconds after it lands. That is why a Polar run and a COROS run end up comparable.

1Default shoes or bike assigned
2Matched to the planned session
3Weather along the route
4Grade-adjusted and condition-adjusted pace
5Records and best efforts
6Training load (TRIMP)
7AI questions and read, if enabled

For coaches

Mixed devices in one team

One athlete on a Forerunner, one on a COROS Pace, one on a Polar Vantage, one who only uses Strava. You see all of them on the same dashboard, plan them the same way, and each structured session goes to whichever watch can take it. Nobody has to change brand to work with you.

Independence

Brand-neutral after the Garmin–TrainingPeaks deal

On 22 July 2026, Garmin bought TrainingPeaks. Nothing announced says TrainingPeaks will treat other watches differently. But your training platform now belongs to a watch maker, and that is a fair thing to think about. OpenAthlete belongs to no brand, its code is public, and your data leaves in one JSON export whenever you want.

OpenAthlete vs TrainingPeaks

On a self-hosted instance

Strava, Garmin, Polar and Suunto each require a developer or partner account with the brand, so most self-hosted servers start with COROS (no vendor account needed), file upload and the Activity Import API.

Questions people ask

Yes, for example Garmin for workouts and wellness, and Strava to bring in your older history. If two services send you the same activities, turn off activity import on one of them in its sync options.

No. Polar's API does not accept them. Polar activities and wellness data come in normally. Workouts go to Garmin, Suunto and COROS.

Not connected yet. Most of them can export FIT files, which you can upload, or send activities to Strava, which syncs with OpenAthlete.

It depends on the brand. Strava and COROS bring your full history (COROS at 50 files a day, so it takes a few days). Garmin and Suunto import the last 30 days when you connect. Polar only sends activities recorded after you connect. Older files can always be uploaded as FIT, GPX or TCX.

Deleting your account erases everything you own and deregisters OpenAthlete from Garmin, Polar, Suunto and the others. Before that, you can download all your data as one JSON file.

No. Every connection, history import and workout export is free. Supporter only adds AI on our keys and unlimited coached athletes.
