Garmin + Claude / ChatGPT
Talk to Claude or ChatGPT about your Garmin training
Garmin doesn't publish an MCP server. OpenAthlete is one: it syncs your activities, sleep and HRV through Garmin's official API, lets Claude or ChatGPT read them, and sends the structured workouts the assistant plans to your watch.
- Free on every plan
- OAuth, no password shared
- Claude, ChatGPT, any MCP client

How it works
Three steps, about five minutes
Connect Garmin to OpenAthlete
Create a free account, open Settings › Integrations and sign in with Garmin on its own authorisation page. OpenAthlete receives a token, never your password.
Add OpenAthlete to Claude or ChatGPT
In Claude, add a custom connector; in ChatGPT, turn on developer mode and create a connector. Paste the address below and approve on the OpenAthlete page.
https://api.openathlete.org/mcpAsk
Write as you would to a coach. The assistant calls the tools it needs, shows which ones, and asks before it changes your calendar.
Two official sign-ins, no password handed over
Community Garmin MCP servers such as mcp-garmin sign in to Garmin Connect with your email and password, through an unofficial library, and keep the session on your computer. OpenAthlete uses Garmin's official partner API: you sign in on Garmin's page and OpenAthlete only receives a token you can revoke.
What the AI sees
What your assistant reads and writes, from Garmin
The assistant never talks to Garmin directly. It works on what OpenAthlete has synced, through 23 MCP tools.

- Send workouts to Garmin
- Yes: to the Garmin Connect calendar, then the watch at its next sync. Running, cycling, pool swimming, strength and more

Garmin's own AI and MCP, and OpenAthlete
What each one does, checked on 3 November 2026. Nothing stops you from using both.
- No MCP server published by Garmin.
- Garmin Connect+ ($6.99 a month in the US at launch) adds Active Intelligence: AI insights and suggestions in the Garmin Connect app, in beta.
- Community MCP servers exist; the ones we checked sign in with your Garmin Connect email and password.
- Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP client, on the AI plan you already have
- Plans structured sessions in your calendar; they reach Garmin Connect and your watch.
- Every device in one history: Garmin, COROS, Suunto, Polar and FIT files, with training load and form
- Free, open source (AGPL), self-hostable. Your coach can work on your calendar through the same server.
Questions about Garmin and AI
Not that we could find on 3 November 2026. Garmin's AI features live in Garmin Connect+ (Active Intelligence, in beta). The Garmin MCP servers on GitHub are community projects, and the ones we checked sign in with your Garmin Connect email and password. OpenAthlete connects through Garmin's official API instead.
Yes, through OpenAthlete. The assistant plans the session in your OpenAthlete calendar with plan_sessions. With workout export on, OpenAthlete pushes it to the Garmin Connect calendar and your watch picks it up at its next sync.
Yes, once you turn on metric import for Garmin in OpenAthlete (it is off by default). Sleep, overnight HRV, resting heart rate, stress and Body Battery then come in every day, and the assistant reads them with get_metrics.
Garmin lets OpenAthlete import the last 30 days when you connect, then every new activity. To go further back, export your data from Garmin and drop the FIT files on the OpenAthlete calendar.
No. The MCP server is free on every OpenAthlete plan, Free included. The model runs on your Claude or ChatGPT account, so their plan limits apply. Supporter (€5 a month) only covers the AI features inside OpenAthlete and unlimited coached athletes.
