Barcelona Marathon: what it asks of you, and how to train for it

01

"Flat and fast", with about 280 m of climbing

GPS data puts the gain near 280 m, much more than Seville or Valencia. It comes as long gentle drags, not hills. Do your goal-pace blocks on a route that rises and falls a little, and practise letting the pace drift 5 to 10 s/km on the way up while the effort stays the same.

02

The long Diagonal out-and-back

A long straight avenue out, a turn, and the same avenue back: it is a head game more than a leg one. Run some long runs on one long straight road and split it into chunks: next kilometre, next drink, next 5 km marker.

03

Declare an honest pace

Starts are staggered by the pace you declare. Overstate it and you spend 10 km being passed and pushed into a pace you cannot hold. Use the goal your training supports by February, not the one you typed in last summer.

Pace and plan by goal

Barcelona Marathon: pick your goal time

Each goal links to its pace chart: splits every 5 km, every kilometre and a printable pace band. Eight goals also have a free 16-week plan with paces worked out from your VMA. Pick the goal your recent half marathon supports, not the one you hope for.

When to start a 16-week plan

Start your 16-week plan on Monday, 23 November 2026

Race day is Sunday, 14 March 2027, in week 16. Started later, the plan loses build weeks, not the taper: cut from the start, never the end.
