Pace calculator and race splits

Type a distance and a goal time: get the pace per kilometre, the speed and the split at every checkpoint. Handy before a race, or to set a treadmill.

How it is calculated

Pace is time divided by distance, speed is distance divided by time: 5:00 per kilometre is 12 km/h. The splits assume an even pace. On a hilly course, or if you plan a negative split, run the first half a few seconds per kilometre slower than the average.

Pace charts by goal time5K from 17:00 to 35:00, 10K from 35:00 to 1:10, half from 1:20 to 2:30, marathon from 2:45 to 6:00: every split, equivalent times and training paces.

Send these targets to your watch

Write your sessions in OpenAthlete with targets as a percentage of your VMA or max heart rate. They reach your Garmin, Suunto or COROS with the paces filled in.

Questions

Running the second half faster than the first. Most road records are run that way: it saves glycogen early and keeps you passing people at the end.

Courses are measured on the shortest line, and GPS drifts between buildings and trees. Expect 200 to 500 m extra on a marathon, and aim for a pace a couple of seconds faster than the calculator says.

Use the speed shown under the pace. Many runners add a 1% incline to make up for the missing air resistance.
